Holly and the Italians | The Right to Be Italian

Je bent geboren in Chicago, richt je band op in Los Angeles, begint met spelen in de pubs van Londen, neemt je debuutplaat met je band op in New York en gaat er prat op Italiaan te zijn. Jij heet Holly Beth Vincent, je band Holly and the Italians en de enige langspeler in 1981 The Right to Be Italian.

Ja, Holly Beth Vincent is me d’r eentje, eentje die haar eigen weg gaat en krijgt wat ze wil. In 1978 is Vincent met haar Italians in Londen, in het hart van de punk. Holly, zangeres en gitarist, en haar vriendjes Mark Sidgwick (bas) en Steve Young (drums) spelen de Londense pubs plat en trekken de aandacht van radiopresentator en rockschrijver Charlie Gillett (The Sound of the City: The Rise of rock and Roll). Dankzij hem mogen Holly c.s. een singletje opnemen: ‘Tell That Girl To Shut Up’; het brengt ze onder contract bij Virgin Records en in het Londense voorprogramma van Blondie. En vervolgens bij Blondie’s producer Richard Gottehrer, die met Holly and the Italians in de New Yorkse Record Plant Studios die debuutplaat opneemt. Naast de incidentele strijkers en blazers dragen ook muzikanten als Anton Fig (drums), Paul Schaffer (piano, orgel) en Talking Head Jerry Harrison (synthesizers) bij aan de punky new wave-sound van Holly and The Italians. 

The Right to Be Italian is in 1981 echt zo’n lp die net even te laat is voor de eerste punk-explosie en net als zovele new wave-bands met een frontvrouw (The Motels, Sue Saad and the Next, The Shirts) blijvend overschaduwd wordt door Blondie. Maar met catchy singles als ‘Tell That Girl To Shut Up’, ‘I Wanna Go Home’ en ‘Miles Away’, de spectoriaanse pracht van ‘Just For Tonight’ en het bijna epische ‘Rock Against Romance’ - ronduit de beste Holly and the Italians-song - is The Right to Be Italian in 1981 toch wel een tot de canon van de Amerikaanse new wave behorende plaat.

Maar ergens houdt het daar al op met Holly Beth Vincent; die tweede Holly and the Italians-plaat komt er niet; een solocarrière komt vervolgens niet van de grond; er voltrekt zich geen wonder. Al hoopte Holly Beth Vincent blijkens ‘Rock Against Romance’ daar wel op:
